Where the desks are
Rental counters are in the arrival halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. International brands (for example Hertz) and Taiwanese companies operate there; some cars are collected from a lot outside the terminal. Book ahead, especially around Lunar New Year and long weekends.
Documents you need
- Your passport and your full driving licence from home.
- An International Driving Permit (IDP). Rental companies refuse cars without one.
- Drivers with a Japanese licence use a certified Chinese translation of the licence instead of an IDP.
- A credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit.
Driving in Taiwan
Traffic drives on the right. Highways use electronic tolling, which rental cars usually handle and bill afterwards. Scooters are everywhere in cities: check mirrors before turning. For Taipei itself, public transport is easier than a car.
